Frequently asked questions

Countertop questions, answered plain.

This guide answers common questions about selection, templating, installation, and everyday care. Every project is different, so final details may vary based on material, layout, cabinet condition, sink type, and jobsite conditions.

Getting started

How do I start the countertop process?
Visit our showroom, bring rough measurements or a cabinet layout if you have one, and choose your preferred material. We can help narrow options by look, budget, durability, and how you use the space.
Do I need exact measurements before getting a quote?
No. Rough measurements are usually enough for an initial estimate. Final pricing is confirmed after template and layout review.
What is the difference between granite and quartz?
Granite is natural stone, so each slab is unique and may have natural variation, pits, fissures, and movement. Quartz is engineered using quartz minerals and resin, so it is more consistent and does not require sealing.
Can I see the actual slab before fabrication?
Yes, and we strongly recommend it for natural stone. Small samples are helpful, but the actual slab shows the true color, movement, and pattern.

Scheduling, template, and installation

When will I be contacted for template?
Templating is scheduled close to production. In most cases, expect contact around two weeks after deposit. If it has been more than three weeks, please call us.
Can the template technician give me my install date?
No. The template technician gathers measurements and jobsite information. Install scheduling is handled separately after the template is reviewed.
What needs to be ready before template?
Cabinets must be permanently installed, level, secured, and cleared off. Existing countertops may need to be removed depending on the project. Sinks, faucets, cooktops, and appliances that affect the countertop layout should be onsite.
What about apron-front or farmhouse sinks?
Apron-front sinks must be installed before template. The countertop is cut to fit the actual sink position, so the sink must be in its final location.
How long does installation take?
Many installs are completed in one day, but larger projects, difficult access, tear-out, plumbing, backsplashes, or special details may require additional time.
Do I need to be home for template and install?
Yes, an adult decision-maker should be present or reachable. We may need approval on seam placement, overhangs, sink position, faucet holes, or other jobsite details.

Pricing and project details

Why can prices change after template?
Quotes based on rough measurements can change if the final template shows different square footage, extra cutouts, added pieces, difficult access, additional labor, or layout changes.
What affects the price of countertops?
Material selection, slab size, square footage, edge profile, sink and cooktop cutouts, backsplash, tear-out, access, seam layout, and installation complexity can all affect price.
Are seams always required?
Not always, but seams are common depending on slab size, countertop length, material pattern, access into the home, cabinet layout, and safe handling limits.
Will seams be invisible?
No seam should be expected to be invisible. We work to make seams clean and properly placed, but visibility depends on color, pattern, lighting, material movement, and layout.

Installation responsibilities

Do countertops need support?
Yes. Overhangs, corners, raised bars, and large unsupported areas may require brackets, corbels, steel, or other support. Support needs are determined by the layout and material.
Who handles plumbing?
Plumbing is typically disconnected before installation and reconnected after installation by the homeowner or plumber, unless other arrangements are made. Countertop installers are not responsible for plumbing reconnection unless specifically included.
Who handles electrical or appliance hookups?
Electrical, gas, and appliance hookups should be handled by the homeowner or a licensed trade professional. Cooktops and appliances must be available when needed for fit verification.
Can new countertops be installed on old cabinets?
Usually, yes, if the cabinets are structurally sound, level, and secured. Weak, loose, uneven, or damaged cabinets should be corrected before template or installation.

Material characteristics and care

Does granite need to be sealed?
Yes, granite should be sealed as needed. Sealer helps resist staining, but it does not make stone stain-proof.
Does quartz need to be sealed?
No. Quartz is nonporous and does not require sealing.
Can I put hot pans directly on the countertop?
Use trivets or hot pads. Granite can handle heat better than many materials, but sudden temperature changes can still cause damage. Quartz can be permanently damaged by excessive heat.
Can I cut directly on the countertop?
Use a cutting board. Cutting directly on stone or quartz can dull knives and may scratch or damage the surface.
What cleaners should I use?
Use warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth. Avoid bleach, vinegar, harsh chemicals, abrasive pads, oven cleaner, drain cleaner, and bathroom cleaners.
Is quartz good for outdoor kitchens?
Quartz is not recommended for outdoor use. Sunlight and weather exposure can cause fading, discoloration, warping, or other permanent damage.
Are pits, fissures, or color variations defects?
In natural stone, no. These are normal characteristics created by nature. Natural stone is selected for its unique movement and variation.

After installation

When can I use my countertops?
Light use can usually begin after installation, but avoid heavy use around seams, sinks, or caulked areas until adhesives and caulk have had time to cure.
Why is there caulk along the wall or backsplash?
Caulk fills small gaps where countertops meet walls, backsplashes, sinks, or other surfaces. Caulk is a maintenance item and may shrink, separate, or discolor over time.
What should I do if I have a concern after installation?
Contact Rocky Tops as soon as possible. Photos and a clear description of the concern help us review the issue quickly and determine the next step.
What is not considered a material defect?
Damage from misuse, impact, excessive heat, harsh chemicals, standing or sitting on countertops, improper support, lack of maintenance, or natural stone characteristics is not considered a material defect.

Please keep in mind

Countertops are heavy, permanent surfaces. Please do not stand, sit, or climb on them. Always use proper supports, cutting boards, trivets, and mild cleaners to protect your investment.
