Material guides

Know your stone before you choose it.

Every material we fabricate has real strengths and real limits. These guides cover what actually matters for a working kitchen or bath in the Midlands: durability, maintenance, heat, and cost, without the marketing spin.

The materials we fabricate

Granite countertop

Granite

Natural igneous stone. Heat-tolerant, unique, proven in working kitchens.

  • Mohs 6–7
  • Excellent heat resistance
  • Needs annual sealing
Quartz countertop

Engineered Quartz

Engineered stone. No sealing, no etching, the lowest-maintenance option.

  • Non-porous
  • No sealing needed
  • Avoid direct heat
Quartzite countertop

Quartzite

Natural metamorphic stone. Harder than granite, with marble-like veining.

  • Mohs 7–8
  • Must be sealed
  • Won't etch from acids
Marble countertop

Marble

Classic calcite stone. Timeless look, highest maintenance demands.

  • Mohs 3–5
  • Etches from acids
  • Needs consistent care
Soapstone countertop

Soapstone

Non-porous natural stone. No sealing, acid-proof, great heat resistance. It will scratch, but scratches sand out.

  • Mohs 2–3.5
  • No sealing needed
  • Will darken over time
Dolomite countertop

Dolomite

Natural stone with marble-like looks. A bit harder than marble, but still etches from acids. Often mislabeled.

  • Mohs 3.5–4
  • Etches from acids
  • Verify before you buy
Travertine countertop

Travertine

Warm limestone with distinctive pitting. Better for floors, baths, and backsplashes than kitchen countertops.

  • Mohs 3–4
  • Etches and stains
  • Best for floors and baths
